Resumen:
The paper sets outs a theoretical basis for the comparison of assemblages of excavated ceramics, in term of the proportions of different types in each assemblage. Type can be defined with reference to two categorical variables; fabric and form are used here. An implementation of this theory, the pie-slice computer package, is described and a worked example is given. Finally, there is a discussion of the implications of this approach for the ways in which excavated pottery is sorted, quantified and catalogued. Possible extensions of the theory to other classes of fonds, particularly animal bone, are also given.
