Resumen:

This paper reviews the development of GIS applications within archaeology and characterises the dichotomy between "application" papers and their post-processual critique. It suggests that methodology is the key difference between the two and the reason for the continuance of the prevailing procedural habitus that is proving to be resistant to change. Examples of typical published papers are used to explore this dichotomy and to comment on its implications.
